Medimap Breach

Grey Power Calls for Stronger Protections as Medimap Cyber Breach Raises Serious Concerns for Older New Zealanders —

Grey Power New Zealand is expressing deep concern following the recent cyber-attack on Medimap, a digital health platform widely used across aged care, disability services and community healthcare.

The breach, which resulted in unauthorised access and changes to patient records, has understandably shaken confidence in systems many older New Zealanders rely on every day. Some records were altered, including names and personal details, and in a small number of cases people were incorrectly marked as deceased. As a precaution, Medimap was taken offline, forcing many care providers to revert to paper systems while investigations continue.

Grey Power National President Gayle Chambers says the incident highlights how vulnerable seniors can be when digital health systems fail.

“Older people already face challenges navigating healthcare services. Many live with multiple conditions and depend on accurate, shared information between doctors, pharmacists, carers and families. When that information is compromised, it doesn’t just affect privacy — it affects confidence, wellbeing, and peace of mind.”

For many seniors, online health platforms are no longer optional conveniences. They are essential tools that support medication management, care coordination, and communication with providers. When these systems are breached, the impact ripples far beyond technology — creating anxiety for older people and added pressure on already stretched frontline staff.

Grey Power also notes that this incident comes amid growing concern over cyber security in the health sector, reinforcing the need for stronger safeguards around sensitive medical data.

“Older New Zealanders should be able to trust that their personal health information is being protected to the highest standard,” National President Gayle Chambers said. “They should not have to worry about whether their records are accurate or who may have accessed them.”

Grey Power is calling on health providers, technology companies and government agencies to urgently strengthen cyber security standards, ensure transparent communication with those affected, and provide practical support for seniors and families navigating the aftermath of this breach.

The organisation is also urging clear accountability, regular updates, and a long-term commitment to protecting digital health systems — particularly where vulnerable populations are involved.

“Technology plays an increasingly important role in healthcare,” President Gayle Chambers said. “But it must always be backed by strong protections, clear responsibility, and a genuine commitment to keeping people safe. Protecting health information is fundamental to dignity, trust and quality care — especially for older New Zealanders.”
