August Ramblings

We have been having hard frosts, good for killing some of the garden pests, but have been rewarded with clear sunny days, although not that warm.

Soon we will have all have our “green” FOGO rubbish bins. The new collection regime starts in October. Keep an eye on the Council information that comes with it. We also strongly recommend that you use your recycling bin in the proper way to reduce the general rubbish. Then you should have no problems with the red bin getting collected only every second week. Now that we have these organic bins, I have no excuse not to tackle the garden.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our mid-winter luncheon on Saturday 22 August at Cobb & Co. Tickets are $35.00 for a three-course lunch with one of three meals to chose from. This is a steal and thanks to Grey Power cheaper than last year. When did such a thing happen recently? Nice to not have to do the dishes as well.

As we move closer to the general election on 7th November Grey Power is giving members as well as the general public a chance to “Meet the Candidates” for the Rotorua and Waiariki Electorate in a forum. Put a circle on 13th October in your diary on your calendar. More information will be sent out.

Then there is this story from Brisbane. For those of us who have beagle dogs can relate too. This cute adorable, butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth dogie, ate 1.1kg of jelly snakes. Taken to the vet to be pumped out. Jelly sweets usually contain a substance that is toxic to dogs. However our lucky beagle ate Natural Confectionery Company jelly snakes which has none of this substance in them. There is this picture of the lovable beagle sitting all innocent - "it wasn’t me" - with piles of regurgitated jelly snakes around him. Maybe the Natural Confectionery Company can put “safe for dogs” on their packets.

How to extend your smartphone battery life:

What actually works — and what’s just a Myth

After two years, your phone barely makes it through half a day. Frustrating — and seemingly unavoidable. Friends and family then trot out the same old advice: drain it completely before charging, never leave it plugged in overnight, and whatever you do, don’t fast-charge it.

The trouble is: most of that isn’t true anymore. And some of it actively damages your battery.

Why this topic is so muddled in the first place


Anyone who owned a cell phone in the 1990s or early 2000s internalized a particular rule: drain it all the way down, then charge it all the way up. Otherwise the battery would “remember” a smaller capacity — the famous memory effect. Back then, that was actually correct. Those devices used nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal-hydride batteries, and the rule applied to them.

The thing is: those batteries haven’t been in our devices for about 20 years. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, headphones, smartwatches — they all use lithium-ion batteries today. And those work in a completely different way. What was right for NiCd batteries is often exactly wrong for lithium-ion batteries.

The real problem isn’t that people give bad advice. The problem is that the technology has changed, but the tips get passed down from generation to generation — like a family recipe nobody questions anymore.

You don’t need to be a chemist to understand what wears out a smartphone battery. Three things matter:

  • Charge cycles. Every full charge from 0 to 100% counts as one charge cycle. A modern smartphone battery survives roughly 500 to 1,000 of these cycles before its capacity drops noticeably. It’s the total amount that counts: charging twice from 50 to 100% uses up one cycle, not two.

  • Heat. This is by far the battery’s worst enemy. Above 95°F (35°C) it gets uncomfortable; above 105°F (40°C) it gets seriously damaging. That’s exactly why leaving your phone on the dashboard in direct sun or in a parked car in summer is such a bad idea.

  • Voltage extremes. A lithium-ion battery is happiest in the middle. Completely empty (actually 0%) and completely full (100%) are both stress states. Constantly forcing the battery into these extremes makes it age faster.

That’s really all you need to know. 


Drain the battery completely before charging. Wrong — and actively harmful. Regularly running down to zero and then charging back to full accelerates aging.

Charging overnight is dangerous. The real myth here is the idea that your phone would destroy itself or even catch fire if it stays plugged in after hitting 100%. It won’t. Both iPhones and Android devices regulate charging intelligently: once 100% is reached, the charging circuit reliably shuts off and only draws as much power as needed to maintain the charge. 

Only use the original charger. A stubborn myth, sometimes fuelled by manufacturers themselves. The truth: modern smartphones charge via the USB-PD (Power Delivery) standard, and it’s standardised. A certified charger and a decent cable are perfectly fine, regardless of brand. What you should avoid is dirt-cheap no-name power bricks from a discount bin without any certification.

Fast charging kills the battery. Overstated, but not pulled entirely out of thin air. Fast charging generates more heat than slow charging, and heat is genuinely the battery’s biggest enemy. What matters is the degree: with moderate fast charging up to about 30 watts, the effect is small because manufacturers intelligently throttle the charging current once the battery temperature gets critical. 

Putting your phone in the fridge protects the battery. Please don’t. You actually hear this one occasionally — the idea is that cold must be good because heat is bad. Sounds logical, but it’s nonsense. The fridge produces condensation that can seep into the device and cause corrosion. The battery doesn’t like extreme cold either. Your phone doesn’t belong in the freezer — neither to “protect” it nor to “cool it down” after a hot day. If your phone is overheating, just turn it off and let it cool down in the shade.

Battery saver apps extend your runtime. Most of these apps are useless at best and counterproductive at worst. What they typically do is “kill” background apps — but modern operating systems already manage that themselves, and more efficiently. 


Here are the measures that, according to current understanding, actually make a difference:

The 20–80% rule — for the cautious. Keeping your battery between 20 and 80% as much as possible is the gentlest treatment. Honestly: the real effect is measurable but small. If you want to baby the battery as much as possible, combine this with “Optimised Charging” or “Adaptive Charging” in your setup. 

Avoid heat. This is the single most important point. Don’t leave your phone in a sun-soaked car. Don’t put it directly on the dashboard. Don’t leave it under your pillow while charging. While gaming or running GPS navigation, take a break when the device gets really warm. A lot of people leave their phone baking in the sun by the pool in summer — and then wonder why the battery wears out so fast.

Clean up background refresh. Lots of apps update themselves in the background, even ones you never open. That eats battery and data. In settings, you can decide app by app whether that’s necessary. On the iPhone, look under “General → Background App Refresh”; on Android it’s tucked away differently depending on the manufacturer. Going through the list once and turning it off for unimportant apps makes a noticeable difference.

Display brightness and always-on display. The display is the biggest power consumer in your phone. Letting brightness adjust automatically and turning off the always-on display (if your device even has one) noticeably extends runtime. On OLED displays, feel free to use dark mode — black pixels are genuinely off and don’t consume power.

Here’s the honest message: even if you do everything right, after two to three years you’ll have a battery at about 80% of its original capacity. That’s not a defect, it’s physics. Lithium-ion batteries age even when they’re not being used. 

If capacity drops below 70% and the device is otherwise still working well, a battery replacement can be worthwhile. On some models it’s difficult or impossible without damaging the device — in which case a battery swap is often the beginning of the end, because the repair becomes almost as expensive as a new device.

Bottom Line:

  • Turn on “Optimized Charging” or “Adaptive Charging”

  • Avoid heat like the plague

  • Turn off background refresh for unimportant apps

  • Tame display brightness, disable the always-on display

  • If you really want to baby it: also keep the battery between 20 and 80%

  • What you can skip: deliberately draining the battery, using only original chargers, installing shady battery apps, or — heaven forbid — putting your phone in the fridge. The technology has moved on; the old rules no longer apply.

  • And when the battery noticeably weakens after three years? A replacement is often cheaper than you’d think — and in many cases the more sustainable solution compared to buying a new device right away.

Exercise and Ageing

As people around the world seek to live longer, healthier lives, the global longevity and wellness market has topped US$2.5 trillion. Yet research shows that one of the best things we can do to remain fitter and healthier for longer isn’t to drop dollars on expensive longevity treatments or supplements; it’s to exercise.

Research shows that those who exercise regularly are less likely to succumb to premature death, and reduce their risk of developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and mental health disorders.

They’re also more likely to be able to keep doing the things they love - from hiking and hefting heavy objects to gardening and playing with the grandkids - for longer.

Sport physiologist and AUT professor Andrew Kilding helps debunk some of the most common myths surrounding exercise and ageing.

Myth 1: My body will decline as I age so there’s no point in exercising

A recent large-cohort study found that physical fitness starts to decline from around the age of 35.

A more sedentary way of life may be partly to blame in some cases, but as testosterone levels in both men and women naturally decrease, we create less lean muscle mass. This drop in lean muscle mass goes hand in hand with an increase in “metabolic age” - a fitness buzzword based on your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

Essentially, your BMR is a measure of how many calories your body needs to keep you alive at rest. Muscle burns more calories than fat so someone with a higher level of muscle mass will burn more calories sitting on the couch than someone with less, meaning the higher your muscle mass the lower your metabolic age will be.

Strength training, then, is particularly important as we grow older, also helping to improve bone density, balance and functional ability.

“Ultimately, these improvements can help reduce injury risk and support independent living,” Kilding said.

If pumping iron isn’t your jam, Kilding stressed that you can still partake.

“Strength training isn’t just about throwing a heavy barbell over your head. Many useful bodyweight exercises can be used to develop functional strength and can be performed without equipment. For some individuals, some assistance or supervision may be needed but when performed correctly these provide a safe and recommended option for older adults.”

And if you’re worried about how well you’ll be able to perform at your age, Kilding has this to say: “We know that individuals older than (35) can achieve some quite remarkable physical performances in events requiring endurance and strength and that exercise can significantly slow down the natural ageing process. Exercise also improves cognitive function and mental health, and can offer social connection, making it one of the most effective strategies for all-round healthy ageing.”

Myth 2: I’m too old to exercise

Research shows exercise is not just safe but beneficial for everyone, even older adults, including those with chronic conditions.

“ Regular exercise can reduce pain, improve mobility and increase muscle strength and independence,” Kilding said.

“Programmes that include balance, flexibility, and resistance training are especially helpful for managing age-related discomfort and weakness.”

Sport physiologist and AUT professor Andrew Kilding says he has seen many examples of people starting exercise in their 70s, 80s, or 90s and making real improvements in their physical function and quality of life. 

AUT’s Never2Old exercise programme, launched in 2002 after a project by a student in his 60s showed older adults benefited significantly from regular strength training, has continued to help over-60s remain fit and healthy, picking up an award from Age Concern North Shore along the way.

“The programme focuses on the physical and social benefits of exercise for older adults and has many examples of people beginning exercise in their 70s, 80s, or 90s and gaining measurable improvements in physical function and quality of life,” Kilding said.

Myth 3: Walking is enough as you get older

There’s no doubt walking is an excellent form of exercise, improving not just our physical - but also our musculoskeletal and mental - health. It could even help us live longer.

University of Leicester researchers found that inactive over-60s who add a 10-minute brisk walk to their day can extend their life by about 11 months in the case of women and 17 months in the case of men. The life-lengthening benefits were even better among those who walked for 30 minutes.

On its own, however, walking doesn’t provide all the benefits older adults need from their exercise regimes.

“Internationally, exercise guidelines for healthy ageing recommend a combination of aerobic activity (such as walking), muscle-strengthening and balance exercises to maintain functional ability as people get older,” Kilding said.

recent Harvard study tracking more than 111,000 people over more than 30 years supports this. Results showed that those with the broadest mix of physical activity had an almost 20% lower risk of early death from all causes.

Walking was the activity associated with the lowest risk of death (17% lower for those who did the most walking compared to those who did the least) followed by tennis, squash and racquetball (15%), rowing (14%), running and weight training (13%), jogging (11%) and cycling (4%). Regularly climbing stairs was linked to a 10% reduced risk.

Myth 4: I’ll never be as fit, strong or agile as I used to be

This depends on how fit, strong and agile you once were. If you weren’t very, you could become fitter, stronger and more agile than ever before. But even if you were an athlete, you can still build on your current fitness, strength and agility.

“ While ageing affects peak physical performance, the body still retains the ability to adapt to exercise at any age allowing you to build strength, fitness, and agility in ways that can support your health,” Kilding said. “Even modest increases in fitness can dramatically improve daily functioning, independence, and overall health.”

Myth 5: Exercise increases my risk of falling

Concerns about falling as we age are certainly valid. As Kilding said, “ A simple fall can have serious consequences, including injury, loss of independence, and significant healthcare costs. Not surprisingly, falls prevention is a highly researched topic in academia.”

Fortunately, research has shown exercise can reduce fall risk by about 25%. Programmes that combine strength, balance, and flexibility training to improve coordination, muscle function and stability have been shown to be the most effective.

“In short, the more you practice moving, the better your body becomes at keeping you upright during everyday movements,” Kilding said.
